Ohio Valley
2 Wins 2 SEC Near Misses
(St. Louis, MO) – The Ohio Valley Conference is getting healthier. Last night’s games are in indication of that. Tennessee Martin (7-7) and Eastern Kentucky (9-6) picked up important non conference wins and Tennessee State (9-4) and Jacksonville State (4-11) were narrow margin losers to Southeastern Conference foes.
Victorious
UT-Martin’s surge continues. With their five game winning streak the Skyhawks have finally evened their record and are playing some of their best basketball. Remember, nine of their first 11 games were played on the road.
Myles Taylor and Twymond Howard both scored 19 points. If Howard stays healthy, Heath Schroyer’s team will be a dangerous team in OVC play.
Eastern Kentucky’s Jarelle Reischel scored 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out seven assists and is locking up the OVC’s newcomer of the year award. The graduate transfer from Rhode Island missed the Colonels’ last game with a sore back, but made all 10 of his free throw attempts in Tuesday’s game and has now connected on a school record 32 straight from the charity stripe.
Close Losses
Tennessee State gave the University of Tennessee all it wanted, falling by the score of 74-69 in Knoxville. The Tigers led by as many as seven points in the second half, but a furious late flurry by UT led to the win. Wayne Martin scored 19 points in the loss.
Jacksonville State took Alabama into overtime before succumbing by a score of 67-59. Four Gamecocks reached double figures in the loss.
OVC teams are letting the ‘money conference’ teams know they mean business.
