A.W. Hamilton Beating Cancer & Telling His Story

A.W. Hamilton’s Cancer Scare

(St. Louis, MO) – Eastern Kentucky coach A.W. Hamilton is overcoming the scare of his life. The reigning Ohio Valley Conference ‘Coach of the Year’ is in full recovery from a summer bout with melanoma. A.W. Hamilton is beating cancer

But it wasn’t easy.

In early June, Hamilton’s assistant coach and best friend Steve Lepore suffered a stroke and it scared Hamilton into getting his own health screening.

A Challenging Journey

The 39-year-old Hamilton is in tip-top shape, so neither he nor his doctors were concerned about the mole behind his ear, but then he was given the news no man, younger than 40 ever expects to hear. His stage-two melanoma diagnosis was both shocking and ominous.

Hamilton’s journey began in June and by mid July, he was diagnosed, operated on and had results. During the ten-day waiting period he had some dark days and turned to his mother. His fears and the ‘what ifs’ were huge.

The married, father of three was concerned about his family, his faith and was challenged to the core. He made a wise choice. He called his mother.

Hamilton Beating Cancer – Telling His Story

Before beginning his third season at EKU, Hamilton is telling his story. He believes he can play a role in reminding men to take their health issues seriously. He reminds us that he had no symptoms, no pains and his cancer ‘came out of nowhere’.

Hamilton tells us Steve Lepore is also recovering well.

The Mayo Clinic describes melanoma as the most serious type of skin cancer and is a growing problem for people under 40.

During our entire conversation with A.W. Hamilton we talked about his high expectations for this year’s Colonel team. You can listen to our entire interview at Valley Hoops Insider Podcasts.

Flooding, lightning strikes, etc. have cost @RacersHoops two home games. Had to play 'neutral site' tonight instead of at home and Wednesday's goes from home to away. Tough break for the Racers, and the whole area has been hit with difficulties. #FatherHarry

Josh Betts @BettsOnSports

Murray State's scheduled home game Wednesday vs. Southern Illinois being moved to Banterra Center in Carbondale. #ValleyHoops

Gigantic game for @BradleyUMBB today in Des Moines. If they have a chance to catch @DrakeBulldogsMB, they have to win today. The Bulldogs can basically win the title today. @BustingBrackets breaks it all down. #FatherHarry https://bit.ly/3EGiVgi

Not rooting for any particular @ValleyHoops, but chaos is always fun. If things break certain ways, after today there could be a six-way tie for fifth place.
