A.W. Hamilton’s Cancer Scare
(St. Louis, MO) – Eastern Kentucky coach A.W. Hamilton is overcoming the scare of his life. The reigning Ohio Valley Conference ‘Coach of the Year’ is in full recovery from a summer bout with melanoma. A.W. Hamilton is beating cancer
But it wasn’t easy.
In early June, Hamilton’s assistant coach and best friend Steve Lepore suffered a stroke and it scared Hamilton into getting his own health screening.
A Challenging Journey
The 39-year-old Hamilton is in tip-top shape, so neither he nor his doctors were concerned about the mole behind his ear, but then he was given the news no man, younger than 40 ever expects to hear. His stage-two melanoma diagnosis was both shocking and ominous.
Hamilton’s journey began in June and by mid July, he was diagnosed, operated on and had results. During the ten-day waiting period he had some dark days and turned to his mother. His fears and the ‘what ifs’ were huge.
The married, father of three was concerned about his family, his faith and was challenged to the core. He made a wise choice. He called his mother.

Before beginning his third season at EKU, Hamilton is telling his story. He believes he can play a role in reminding men to take their health issues seriously. He reminds us that he had no symptoms, no pains and his cancer ‘came out of nowhere’.
Hamilton tells us Steve Lepore is also recovering well.
The Mayo Clinic describes melanoma as the most serious type of skin cancer and is a growing problem for people under 40.
