Award Winners Climbing Record Books
Taylor, Broome & Key Making their Marks
(St. Louis, MO) – Terry Taylor and Tyreke Key are near the end of their college careers and Johni Broome is at the beginning of his, but all three players are climbing record books. The weekly award winners in the Ohio Valley and Missouri Valley Conference are keeping their Sports Information Directors busy.
Missouri Valley Conference
While Tyreke Key was scoring 29 points during an Indiana State victory he also jumped past three Sycamore greats on the all-time scoring list. Blowing past Jordan Barnes, David Moss and Jake Odum, Key is now sixth on ISU’s all-time list.
Key’s performance leaves him 87 points from fifth on the scoring list and he earned the Valley’s ‘Player of the Week‘ award. ISU (12-8, 9-6) is fourth in the MVC standings and Sunday’s win was the 100th conference coaching win for Greg Lansing. His win total is eleventh most in Valley history.
Drake got back into action this week and won two of their three games. The Bulldogs split their two games with 22nd ranked Loyola Chicago and center Darnell Brodie was a big part of that success. Sunday he blocked a potential game winning shot and scored nine points, grabbed eight rebounds and slowed down LUC’s Cameron Krutwig.
The Seton Hall transfer is the conference’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘.
Ohio Valley Conference
Austin Peay’s Terry Taylor is now just breaking his own records. He owns the most OVC ‘Player of the Week‘ awards (he earned his 17th this week) and is APSU’s all-time leading scorer. Last week recorded three double-doubles, raising his nation’s best total to 16. Taylor is the only player to rank in the top ten nationally in both scoring and rebounding.
He shares the ‘Player of the Week‘ honors with Belmont’s Grayson Murphy. The 6’2 guard recorded the nation’s 11th triple-double of the season and the first in Belmont’s Division 1 history. Murphy led the Bruins to their record-breaking 26th straight OVC win while the Bruins improved to 16-0 in conference play and 22-1 overall.
UT Martin’s Cameron Holden keeps changing his ‘career-high’ status in the Skyhawk media guide. The OVC’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ did that when he handed out seven assists against APSU. His 19 point/14 rebound Murray State performance pushed his weekly averages to 12.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Johni Broome picked up his third straight ‘Freshman of the Week‘ award. The Morehead State freshman racked up his seventh and eighth double-doubles. That is the best rookie number in more than 30 seasons. Broome is climbing record books with his seventh weekly freshman award.
