Bad Night In the Valley
Beane Scores 28 in Only MVC Win!
(St. Louis, MO) – A night filled with opportunities turned into an evening of disappointment. As four Missouri Valley Conference teams took the court on Wednesday there were two nationally ranked teams in their cross-hairs, a game against a 5-1 team from a larger conference and a regional rivalry game on tap.
Only the regional rivalry was successfully navigated. Southern Illinois had an easy time of it at Southern Illinois Edwardsville in the “SIU Showdown”. The Salukis defeated the Cougars 79-67 as Anthony Beane scored 28 points giving him a three game stretch of 27, 27 & 28 during the Egyptian Dawgs’ three game winning streak.
The disappointments were found else where. Wichita State’s 35 game regular season winning streak was snapped by a one point, 69-68 overtime loss at #25 Utah.
Indiana State’s hopes of knocking off in-state and 23rd ranked Butler ended early as the Bulldogs got out to an early lead and won easily (77-54) in Terre Haute.
Loyola-Chicago (4-2) had won two straight and hosted Tulane (6-1) from the American Athletic Conference but fell 83-70.
Opportunities missed. Illinois State came within an eyelash of knocking off VCU Tuesday night, but lost by the final score of 66 to 62. What could have been a rare week in the MVC particularly with Bradley and Evansville picking up solid wins on Tuesday, has turned into one of disappointment.
