Big Men Dominating Weekly Awards
Non-conference Winding Down
(St. Louis, MO) – “You can’t teach size” is one of the oldest adages in sports and that is proving out in the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conferences. This week ‘big men’ are dominating the weekly awards. As 2020 winds down, the MVC is approaching conference play and the OVC has started its league action.
Ohio Valley Conference
This week’s OVC award winners were all dual threat front court players. Junior post players share this week’s ‘Player of the Week’ award. Belmont’s Nick Muszynski and Eastern Kentucky’s Tre King share the honor. Muszynski averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds during the Bruins’ two wins, while King averaged 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. The award was King’s second of the season.
Southern Illinois Edwardsville’s Sidney Wilson scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds while dishing out five assists during the Cougars’ road win at Morehead State. The UConn transfer is this week’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’ and is averaging over 13 points per game.
Speaking of Morehead State, MSU freshman Johni Broome claimed his third (in four weeks) ‘Freshman of the Week’ award. Broome averaged ten points and eight rebounds during the Eagles’ two games. The 6’10 forward leads all OVC rookies in rebounding (7.7) and the second leading freshman scorer.
Missouri Valley Conference
Missouri State big man Gaige Prim and Southern Illinois wing Marcus Domask share this week’s ‘Player of the Week‘ award. Prim sparked the Bears to three wins while averaging 18.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game. The 6’8 Prim made 78% of his shots and is one of the big men dominating league play.
Domask scored 26 points during SIU’s upset win at Butler. The Salukis ended Butler’s 59-game, non-conference home winning streak. He averaged 17 points per game during SIU’s 3-0 week.
Drake is 9-0 and transfer ShanQuan ‘Tank’ Hemphill is one of the main reasons. This week’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ averaged over 17 points while shooting over 72% from the field. The ‘Newcomer‘ award is Hemphill’s second straight honor.
