Ohio Valley
Defensive Eagles
(St. Louis, MO) – Morehead State Head Coach Sean Woods is building a defensive dynamo and his team is off to a great start. After Wednesday’s 60-46 win over Saint Louis, the former Kentucky Wildcat is most proud of the way his team defends.
Coming into the contest the Eagles (5-1) had the fifth best defense in the country (56.2 ppg) and were twelfth nationally in steals. The Ohio Valley Conference school put that defensive prowess to work on Wednesday night.
Woods, in his fourth year leading the Eagles, has created a tenacious culture that invites hard working, ‘doing the dirty work’ kind of players. What they lack in size, the Eagles make up for with effort and athleticism. In the first half of Wednesday’s win they had collected more floor burns than the Billikens collected baskets.
There are no easy shots taken by Eagle opponents. They’re 62nd in field goal percentage defense (38.7).
Coach Woods enjoyed the win and told me his team has a junk yard dog mentality.
They will need that tenacity and a healthy Corban Collins. Their next two games are against Indiana and Pittsburgh. Collins sat out the second half of the win. He injured both his ankle and back at Chaifetz Arena.
Woods loves the passion his team exhibits, especially that of senior Anthony Elechi. He’s also bullish on the possibilities in front of the Ohio Valley Conference.
Five of the six East Division teams in the OVC are over .500 and boast of a 26-10 combined record. This weekend OVC teams have opportunities against ‘money conference’ teams Northwestern, Indiana and Memphis.
