Denver Miller Classic
(St. Louis, MO) – Denver Miller… That’s all you have to say. Denver Miller was the legendary Kirkwood High School basketball coach who stalked the Pioneer side lines for more than 40 years. His teams understood fundamentals and they could press you into oblivion.
This week the Pioneer basketball program hosts their annual “Denver Miller Classic”. Kirkwood hosts a high level tournament year in and year out and 2014 is no exception. The field is strong the star quality is there too.
Chaminade’s Red Devils are the top seed and bring with them arguably the best player in the St. Louis area. Sophomore Jayson Tatum is averaging over 25 points per game and ranked as high as the fifth best player in the class of 2K16. He is being recruited by the biggest and blue-est of the Blue Blood programs in the NCAA.
Duchesne is the fourth ranked team in the stlhighschoolsports.com small school poll. They have three players averaging double digits in scoring and point guard Sam Briscoe averages just under 10 and runs their high powered offense to perfection. The Pioneers are averaging almost 70 points per game.
Jennings brings electric performer Brandon Hollins. The 6’6” senior is averaging 19 points and ten rebounds per game and smiles all contest long. He is the most under-rated player in ‘the Lou.’
Eureka football player and outstanding forward Mason Bendigo is averaging 18 and eight. He is a ‘stretch four’ in that he can power you inside and step outside and hit the three.
The host Pioneers of Kirkwood have a tenacious defense and two athletic 6’4” performers in Maryville bound Evan Booker and Antonio Weston.
There is no weak sauce at the Denver Miller Classic and you can watch the semi-finals and championship game on prepsportsschowcase.com. We’ll have fun bringing it to you, but it would be worth your time to get to Kirkwood Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
