Early Season Success
(St. Louis, MO) – An Eastern Kentucky sweep and a top ranked upset greatly affected this week’s award winners in the Valley conferences.
Ohio Valley Conference
Senior Jarelle Reischel helped Eastern Kentucky to a successful week (3-1). The Rhode Island transfer averaged 20.3 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists in the Colonels’ four games. For his work, the Frankfurt, Germany native was named both the OVC ‘Player of the Week’ and ‘Newcomer of the Week.’ His 37 point performance against Longwood was the best scoring EKU performance in over 12 years.
The OVC ‘Freshman of the Week’ also came from EKU. Nick Mayo averaged 10 ppg, making over 57% of his shots.
Missouri Valley Conference
When you knock off the number one team in the nation, you normally get noticed. Northern Iowa’s Wes Washpun scored 21 points and handed out eight assists in the Panthers’ upset win over # 1 North Carolina, and received the MVC’s ‘Player of the Week’ award.
Speaking of sweeps, Southern Illinois is 4-0 so far and point guard Mike Rodriguez is one of the main reasons. The junior point guard averaged 12 points and four assists in two Saluki wins and was named the Valley ‘Newcomer of the Week.’
Great Lakes Valley Conference
UW-Parkside senior Andy Mazurczak eclipsed the 1,000 point career scoring mark and averaged 21 ppg and has been named the GLVC ‘Player of the Week.’ He averaged seven assists and moved into fourth place on the Ranger all-time assist list.
