Evansville’s McCarty Suspended
UE Investigating Title IX Allegations
(St. Louis, MO) – There is unfortunate news out of the Evansville basketball program. Second-year head coach, and Evansville native, Walter McCarty has been placed on ‘administrative leave pending an investigation into alleged violations of the University’s Title IX policy’. That according to UE’s official press release.
Assistant coach and former Samford head coach, Bennie Seltzer will serve as the interim head coach.
University President Christopher Pietruszkiewicz’s internal letter to the UE community states the university had received reports of unwelcome conduct dating back as far as March of 2018. Pietruszkiewicz’s letter goes on to say ‘we have counseled him about this behavior’ but a recent troubling report of his interactions with a member of the campus community, moved them to this current decision.
UE’s website describes Title IX violations ‘Applies to All Forms of Sexual Harassment, Sexual Violence, Intimate Partner Violence and Stalking for Students, Staff, Faculty and Third Parties.’
A national law firm will carry out the investigation, and the press release says a ‘fair and informed decision on Coach McCarty’s status’ will be be made.
President Pietruszkiewicz offered support and resources to any student or employee who believes they have been the victim of inappropriate behavior.
Seltzer was 24-41 has Samford’s head coach. His assistant coaching resume is impressive. He had stints Oklahoma, Marquette and Indiana prior to his time at Samford and with Loyola and Washington State afterwards. He was an All-Pac 10 player for Washington State where he still holds the program’s career assist record of 473.
The Purple Aces’ conference opener is Tuesday at Missouri State.
