Final Weekly Award Winners

To the Victors Go the Spoils

(St. Louis, MO) – During the final weekend of the regular season the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conferences crowned champions and have now given out their final weekly awards. When you win championships, your players often win awards and to the victors go the spoils.

Austin Phyfe finished the regular season with a rebounding explosion. During the Panthers’ championship clinching game against Drake, the 6’9 center scored 17 points and for the second time in the last three games grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds. The Valley’s ‘Player of the Week‘ finished the season as the league’s leading rebounder.

Donovan Clay – valpoathletics.com

Valparaiso freshman Donovan Clay produced one of the best weeks of his collegiate career. The Alton, Illinois native scored a career-high 22 points during the Crusaders’ win over Missouri State. While the Crusaders had to play both games without player of the year candidate Javon Freeman-Liberty, Clay added 11 points and five boards in Saturday’s loss at Indiana State.

This week’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ is one of five Valley freshmen to average at least nine points per game. Southern Illinois’ Marcus Domask (13.8) was the leader among the rookies. Loyola Chicago’s Marquise Kennedy (9.3), Indiana State’s Jake LaRavia (9.3), Clay (9.2) and Domask’s SIU teammate Lance Jones (9.0) were the others.

Ohio Valley Conference

UT Martin’s Quintin Dove finished the season in spectacular fashion. This week’s ‘Player of the Week‘ collected 53 points and 25 rebounds during the Skyhawks two games. Dove (20.2) finished the season second to Austin Peay’s Terry Taylor in the league’s scoring race.

The OVC’s hottest team earned a share of the league title and picked up the conference tournament’s top seed. Belmont (24-7, 15-3) has won ten straight games and to the victors go the spoils. Transfer guard Tyler Scanlon averaged 18 points per game and is this week’s ‘Co-Newcomer of the Week‘. The award was Scanlon’s third this season.

Kayne Henry’s late season surge continues. The Jacksonville State forward has won or shared four of the last seven ‘Newcomer‘ awards. While JSU was earning its way into the OVC Tournament, Henry averaged 17 points and 9.5 rebounds. His double-double against Tennessee Tech sparked the Gamecocks to a tournament-earning victory.

Without a doubt Jordyn Adams has wrapped up the OVC’s ‘Freshman of the Year‘ award as this week he earned his tenth ‘Freshman of the Week‘ ward. Those ten weekly awards are the second most in league history. Adams scored 42 points during Austin Peay’s two games. The 6’3 guard is the conference’s leading freshman scorer and fifth overall (17.8 ppg).

Playing the point at @UEAthletics_MBB is @EKUHoops transfer Tayshawn Comer. The @ValleyHoops squad opens its season on Tuesday, but we wanted to get to know Comer now. Here is our conversation. #ValleyRunsDeep #NCAAHoops

Graphic from @NateSilver538. As a 'news watcher' this is one of the most fascinating elections to watch. I don't truly like either candidate, so that makes it less exciting, but as a 'news oriented' person, this is incredible theater.
