First Week All-Stars

Spectacular Starts

(St. Louis, MO) – Early season all-stars may be setting a tone for the season. After all the preseason predictions about who would stand out, there were some first week surprises.

Missouri Valley Conference

Zach Copeland

Zach Copeland was the best player on one of two MVC teams that won a pair of games. The 6’4 senior scored 20 points in a big win over Belmont and 19 in Illinois State’s easy win over Little Rock. This week’s ‘Player of the Week‘ looks to be the ‘go to’ player for Dan Muller’s deep Redbird squad.

The ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ is Evansville’s DeAndre Williams. The 6’9 sophomore who lit up defenses during the Purple Aces’ summer foreign trip has continued that pattern. During UE’s season-opening win over Ball State Williams scored 26 points, while making 11 of 14 field goal attempts. He also led the Aces with nine rebounds.

Ohio Valley Conference

UT Martin’s Quintin Dove was a preseason All-OVC team member and did not disappoint with his first week performance. The 6’8 senior averaged 24.5 points and 9.5 rebounds for the 1-1 Skyhawks. This week’s ‘Player of the Week‘ recorded a double-double in UT Martin’s loss to East Tennessee State.

The OVC honors both a newcomer and a freshman each week. This week they both come from Tennessee Tech. The ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ is Amadou Sylla. The 6’8 native of Mali averaged 16.5 points and nine rebounds during the Golden Eagles’ split of their first two games. Sylla also recorded a double-double.

Freshman of the Week‘ honors go to Tech’s Keishawn Davidson. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native recorded a double-double of his own. During TTU’s loss to Western Kentucky he scored 18 points becoming the first Tech rookie in over 30 years to open his career with that many points. While coach John Pelphrey was earning his first win with his new team, Davidson was scoring 11 points and handing out ten assists. He was the first Tech freshman to reach ‘dime’ double figures in 20 years.
