Fresh Faces Win MVC & OVC Weekly Awards
(St. Louis, MO) – There are two new names added to the weekly award winners in the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conference. Two of the five weekly award winners were brand new. As the season wears on, new players emerge and find their way into productive roles.
Missouri Valley Conference
Illinois State’s Phil Fayne has started all season as a transfer from Western Nebraska, and has been a significant part of the season-long success of first place Illinois State, but with MiKyle McIntosh missing some time with a knee injury, Fayne has jumped into a prime role.
Fayne is this week’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’, and first time award winner, for averaging 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Part of his success was a 16-point and ten rebound performance against Evansville. The Redbirds (18-4, 10-0) entertain Northern Iowa on Wednesday.
Loyola’s Milton Doyle had a ‘Milton Doyle Kind of Week’ by averaging 17 points, four rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals in the Ramblers’ sweep of Bradley and Indiana State. (See ‘Versatility = Success in the Missouri Valley Conference’ for more on Doyle) Doyle received his second ‘Player of the Week’ award this year and the third weekly honor of his career. Doyle was a four time winner of the ‘Newcomer of the Week’ during his freshman season.
Ohio Valley Conference
UT Martin has its first current season ‘Player of the Week’ award, but it took a mighty effort from Jacolby Mobley to earn the honor. The 6’ guard scored 36 points against Austin Peay and 26 against Murray State. In the Skyhawks two games, the senior from Starkville, Mississippi buried 12 three-pointers.
Terrell Miller is becoming a regular on the ‘Newcomer of the Week’ winner’s stand. The 6’8 junior has earned the award three times in the last six weeks. The Murray State forward averaged 22.5 points and seven rebounds as the Racers split a pair of games.
One of the hottest teams in the OVC is Southeast Missouri. The Redhawks (11-13, 6-3) have won four straight games, and one of the reasons for that streak is the play of back-to-back-to-back ‘Freshman of the Week’ winner Denzel Mahoney. The 6’4 Florida native averaged 22.5 points and five rebounds per game.
There are four weeks left in the season.
