Missouri Valley
Good Sundays Save Bad Saturdays
(St. Louis, MO) – After a disasterous Saturday, the Missouri Valley Conference picked up some very important wins on Sunday. Losing four of seven Saturday games (including Northern Iowa’s first loss of the season), made for a potentially ruinous weekend for the Valley.
However, Illinois State and Southern Illinois saved the weekend with wins over Chicago area colleges. Illinois State knocked off DePaul and the Salukis defeated Chicago State.
Getting a win over the Big East’s DePaul helps a league still looking for an RPI boost.
Wichita State, Missouri State and Loyola were winners on Saturday. Evansville lost for just the second time and Northern Iowa’s loss was in overtime at VCU.
The 5-4 record for the weekend (Bradley didn’t play) could have been a lot worse. ISU’s 78-72 win was sparked by Daishon Knight’s scoring (25 points) and Reggie Lynch’s double-double (13 points and 13 rebounds).
Anthony Beane led the Salukis to their 65-50 win. SIU (6-4) has won four of their last five games.
A side note, Evansville’s loss was to the Ohio Valley’s Murray State and Missouri State’s victory was over the OVC’s Southeast Missouri giving the Valley seven wins in the first ten games of the MVC/OVC challenge.
