History in the OVC
28 Free Throws, Lindenwood & Shulman
(St. Louis, MO) – Two thrilling games highlighted the first day of the Ohio Valley Conference postseason tournament. There was some history in the OVC as Lindenwood won its first ever OVC Tournament game, the Lions set a tournament record and UT Martin coach Jeremy Shulman claimed his first Division 1 tournament win.
Lindenwood (16-16,10-10) made an OVC tournament record 28 straight free throws and defeated Morehead State 73-65. Lion guard Reggie Bass made history in the OVC making 17 of those 28 free throws and the Lions earned the program’s first-ever Division 1 postseason victory.
Bass finished with 23 points. Anias Futrell recorded a 15-point, 13-rebound, double-double as LU overcame a nine point half-time deficit to claim the historic win. OVC ‘Freshman of the Year’ Jadis Jones (10) and Markeith Browning (14) also reached double figures.
Coach Kyle Gerdeman’s team has won two straight games and five of its last seven.
Morehead State finishes the season with a 15-17 record.
UT Martin Moves On
Tennessee Martin and Tennessee Tech played a thriller, with the Skyhawks prevailing 70-67. Eighth seeded UT Martin earned their trip into the tournament’s quarterfinals behind the scoring and heroics of Tarence Guinyard. It was Guinyard’s triple that gave the Skyhawks the lead for good with a little over a minute to play.
The junior guard helped UT Martin to erase a seven-point, half-time deficit by scoring all 18 of his points in the second half. Guinyard was the only Skyhawk to be named to any OVC all-conference selections. He was both a first-team, all-conference player and was named to the ‘all-newcomer’ team. The 14-18 Skyhawks also handed rookie head coach Jeremy Shulman his first-ever, D1 postseason victory.
