Holiday Tournament Update
(St. Louis, MO) – Christmas break brings a plethora of prep basketball tournaments. Here in St. Louis a few of my favorites are the MICDS Holiday Tournament, the Coaches Versus Cancer (formerly the Meramec Holiday Festival) and they are reviving the historic Normandy Christmas Tournament.
Hazelwood Central is the top seed at CVC and Head Coach Josh Martin’s team is also the second ranked team in the entire St. Louis area. The Hawks won their first two games of the tournament (over Eureka and Parkway West) and are a deep and veteran bunch.
Martin told me he his team is solid and filled with senior leaders. One of the best players in the metro area is Xavier Sneed. The ‘X Man’ is headed to Kansas State next school year, but there is plenty of talent on this year’s team.
Martin says his team wants a shot at top ranked Chaminade and that he’s proud of the relationship he has with former players participating in college basketball.
Hazelwood Central’s victim in the second round of the CVC was previously undefeated Parkway West. The Longhorns won 19 games last season and return their entire roster from that team.
Head Coach John Wright likes his team and is excited about the growing game and versatility of outstanding big man Wyatt Yess.
Yess has received scholarship offers from Missouri, Saint Louis University and Wyoming. Just a junior, the 6’8 post player has been starting since his freshman season.
Hazelwood Central takes another undefeated foe in Webster Groves in the semi-finals. Those two teams are used to meeting in the finals. One of those teams have won each of the last five tournaments hosted at Meramec Community College.
