Horton Doubling His Pleasure
(St. Louis, MO) – Doubling up is something Chris Horton does extremely well. The Austin Peay post player has brought two times the Horton impact.
The 6’8 senior from Decatur, Georgia is the second Horton to play basketball at Austin Peay. His father, Eddie played for the Governors in the mid 1970’s, so the Hortons have doubled their contributions to the Austin Peay basketball program.
This season the younger Governor has been collecting double-doubles (points & rebounds) like a teenage girl collects selfies. After Saturday’s 22 point and 15 rebound performance, Horton has 17 double-doubles in Austin Peay’s 22 games.
Horton’s career numbers are impressive. His 304 blocked shots are the second most in OVC history. His 1,426 points rank him twefth in the Austin Peay record book. With two more points he will move into eleventh and with 16 points he would surpass the total of the legendary James ‘Fly’ Williams! As one of the rare players with over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds (1,093) he is eleventh on the league’s all-time list and second in Governor’s history.
Head Coach Dave Loos told ‘Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook’ before the season that, “Chris has had a really nice career for us. I can see him playing professionally somewhere. He can really rebound and block shots, and he’s working tirelessly on his strength and low-post game.”
After witnessing Horton’s 37 point – 13 rebound game against his team, Lipscomb Head Coach Casey Alexander told the ‘Leaf-Chronicle’, “He played like a man among boys.”
Loos says he has to fight to not take Horton’s numbers for granted, since they seem to come so consistently. During his junior year, Horton became the first Austin Peay player to average a double-double since 1991 and he is dwarfing those numbers this season.
Twice this season, Horton has been named the OVC ‘Player of the Week’. This year’s double-double totals bring his career total to 51.
Austin Peay has received two-times the Horton results.
