Loyola Basketball – Angles, Mismatches & Translations

(St. Louis, MO) – One of the most interesting coaches in the Missouri Valley Conference is Loyola’s Porter Moser. He talks about ‘keeping the arrow pointing in the right direction’, his jacket has its own twitter account, and his descriptive phrases are rarely like those of his brothers in the coaching fraternity.

Moser & Majerus – @PorterMoser

Moser was a head coach in the Valley (2003-2007) with Illinois State and then spent several years on Rick Majerus’ staff here in St. Louis. There is a clear Majerus stamp on Moser who is methodically moving the Rambler program up the MVC food chain.

Some of his recent comments include thoughts about angles, projectors, translatable abilities and mismatches. He quotes Majerus often and engages the interviewers with regularity. In fact his personal twitter page has Majerus in his profile picture.

Then to no surprise really, I see him shaking the President’s hand today on twitter (@PortersJacket). His jacket is good at candid shots!

Moser’s Ramblers are off to a solid start (12-5, 2-2) and are looking for the kind of success (or more) of his 2015 team that won the College Basketball Invitational. He has more pieces than at any time since LUC has been in the Valley.

Newcomer Aundre Jackson has been a welcome physical addition to this year’s team and coach Moser says Jackson has ‘translatable skills’, but more importantly ‘he loves guys with angles’.  Got it? Take a listen!

Jackson has found scoring to be more difficult now that the Valley season has begun. Moser says that’s because ‘everybody has a projector’.

Moser was named one of the top 50 assistant coaches in the nation in 2009, while working with Majerus at Saint Louis University, and earned three, 18 win seasons when he was the head coach at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.

Speaking of Donte Ingram’s recent scoring uptick (he’s averaging almost 18 points per game since returning from injury), the affable Moser says, simply, ‘he’s a mismatch up guy’.

Moser played collegiately at former MVC institution Creighton, where he was a two-year starter and helped the Bluejays win the 1989 MVC title.

Commenting on the his jacket having its own twitter account, he said he’s sure it is a Loyola student or alum working on the feeds, because the feeds are genuinely positive, knowledgeable about the program and genuinely funny and entertaining.

The sixth year head coach understands the times, the game and his place in it all.

Do Good
