Marshall – National Coach of the Year
(St. Louis, MO) – He may have lost a heart breaker of a game yesterday, but today Wichita State Head Coach Gregg Marshall has been named the Henry Iba – Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
The Shockers went 35-1, were undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference play (18-0), won the MVC post season tournament and received a number one seed and won one game in the NCAA national tournament.
Marshall’s career mark at WSU is a remarkable 174-71 and he has led the Shockers to three straight NCAA tournaments after winning the NIT tournament in 2011. During his nine years at Winthrop he compiled a record of 194 – 83.
“Gregg Marshall has established himself as one of the nation’s top coaches, first at Winthrop and now at Wichita State,” said USBWA President Kirk Wessler of the Peoria Journal Star. “But the job he did this season, coaching his team to an unbeaten regular-season record and the historic accomplishment of becoming the first team to win 35 games without a loss, was transcendent.”
Marshall was chosen from among 10 finalists that included two former Valley coaches, Jim Crews of Saint Louis (Evansville) and Greg McDermott of Creighton.
