MVC/OVC Weekly Honors

Veterans Strutting Their Stuff

(St. Louis, MO) – Two long standing stars were strutting their stuff this week and have received their respective league’s weekly honors. While Parker Stewart and Ben Krikke stood out, there were plenty of amazing performances by Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conference players.

There are two games left for each of the teams in these two leagues and there is so much still at stake.

Ohio Valley Conference

UT Martin (18-11, 10-6) has won three straight games and during last week’s victories Parker Stewart was spectacular. The 6’5 guard racked up scoring performances of 18 and 32 points. During the Skyhawks’ sweep of SIUE and Tennessee Tech he buried 12 of eighteen long distance attempts. The OVC ‘Player of the Week‘ award is Stewart’s second weekly honor. Stewart is the league’s second most prolific three point shooter.

Tennessee Tech’s Brett Thompson produced a break out performance. The Mineral Area transfer dropped 28 points on Lindenwood and 24 on UT Martin. Thompson’s all-round game has been solid all season, but his offensive explosion earned the 6’1 junior the ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ honor. TTU (13-16, 9-7) is tied with Tennessee State for the OVC’s all-important fourth place spot.

Cameron Haffner picks up weekly honors like Meryl Streep wins Oscars. The 6’2 guard is the OVC’s ‘Freshman of the Week‘ for the fourth straight week and fifth time overall. Haffner averaged 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds as Eastern Illinois (9-20, 5-11) dropped two games.

Tennessee State’s Jr Clay scored 40 points against SIUE, while Lindenwood’s Keenon Cole recorded a pair of double-doubles. Stewart’s UT Martin teammate Jordan Sears added 30 points during the Skyhawks’ triumph over SIUE.

Missouri Valley Conference

Ben Krikke is climbing the Valparaiso all-time scoring list. The 6’9 senior poured in 58 points during the Beacons’ two games. Krikke scored 34 points Sunday and the Valley’s ‘Player of the Week‘ is now ninth on the Valpo’s all-time scoring list (1,541). He has taken over the Valley’s scoring race, averaging 19.6 points per game.

Illinois Chicago’s number of weekly honors doubled last week. Jalen Jackson earned the MVC’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ award, matching Tre Anderson’s honor from the season’s third week. The 6’2 freshman scored 23 and 19 points as the Flames (11-18, 3-15) split their two games. UIC’s young and depleted roster contains just one upperclassman (Anderson).

Drake’s Roman Penn averaged 19 points, six rebounds and 6.5 assists and Illinois State’s Darius Burford averaged 20.5 points.

An emotional win for UNI. 36 hours ago, they learned their teammate, one of their leaders, Grace Boffeli, suffered a season-ending ACL tear.

Two of her roommates, Maya McDermott and Kayba Laube, combined for 58 points in an historic win. Credit @TommyBirch with great questions.
