SLU Billikens
New Look Billikens
(St. Louis, MO) – Saint Louis University did more than unveil a new logo late last week, they pulled the curtain back on a new look team. Sunday’s opener against Hartford provided an offensive show that wasn’t seen all last season.
Defeating the Hawks 85-68, Jim Crews’ team scored more points than in any game last season. SLU hit the 80 point mark one time last season, and that was against Division 2 Rockhurst.
Five different Billikens reached double figures in scoring, led by Mike Crawfords’ 17 points. Joining Crawford in the scoring parade were Reggie Agbeko (11), Miles Reynolds (16), Ash Yacoubou (13) and Milik Yarbrough (13). Only Yarbrough averaged as many as 10 points per game last season.
SLU was particularly good in the paint, outscoring Hartford 46-18.
Granted this isn’t VCU or Dayton, but last season’s Billiken squad had trouble putting the ball in the basket, so Sunday’s win was a welcome sign of potential things to come. Saint Louis made almost 53 percent of their shots while Crawford and Reynolds combined to sink 15 of their combined 17 free throws.
The Billikens’ next test is Wednesday at Southern Illinois Edwardsville. The Cougars won their season opener 79-70 over Arkansas State.
