One on One with Belmont’s Scott Corley

Bruins’ Athletic Director

(St. Louis, MO) – Belmont’s Scott Corley is a Bruin. He was a legendary basketball player in the earliest days of Rick Byrd’s coaching career and is now the Director of Athletics. Belmont and Nashville have grown up together and Bruins’ Athletics is moving to the Missouri Valley Conference.

Now in is his fifth year as the AD, Corley has been instrumental in continuing the Belmont success. He hired current basketball coach Casey Alexander and he knows his basketball.

Corley scored over 2,000 points and made 420 three-pointers in a Belmont uniform. Long term fans still remember his sweet left-handed jumper. Under his leadership the Crockett Center (practice facility and much more!) has been completed and now they make the step up to the MVC.

Transitions and Growth

Belmont’s Scott Corley didn’t initiate the conference move, but was enthusiastic about the possibilities when asked. Since he graduated from Belmont in 1990, the athletic program moved from the NAIA, to Division 1, then joining the Atlantic Sun Conference before moving to the Ohio Valley Conference. After ten years in the OVC, they are moving on.

Corley says he loves the OVC, but the growth of the university and other factors led to this being the right time to make this move.

While Jeff Jackson was beginning his first days as Commissioner of the Missouri Valley Conference, he was  contacting new Belmont President Dr. Greg Jones. The ball was rolling and in a few shore months the decision was made. Corley says it was a perfect combination of both entities being ready at the same time.

Basketball Bruins

While the Bruins are heading for the MVC next season, the current season is extremely important to Corley and Belmont fans. The first of two gigantic contests with Murray State is coming this Saturday. Corley is glad Murray State is also joining the Valley, so that their mutual rivalry can continue. Saturday’s contest will knock one of the two OVC heavyweights out of a first-place tie with Morehead State.

There is a ton of basketball to be played this season and we’ll bring you every bit of information and insight we can about these two great leagues. Belmont’s Scot Corley is bullish about the future and bullish about the present.
