OVC Big Dogs Win on the Road Saturday

(St. Louis, MO) – Winning on the road is the key to winning conference championships and the OVC big dogs of the Ohio Valley Conference did just that on Saturday. Undefeated Murray State, Belmont and Morehead State were Saturday winners.

Tennessee State was the only OVC squad to defend its home court. The Tigers defeated Southeast Missouri 95-84 in a wild scoring affair.

We talked it over with Murray State’s Matt McMahon after their narrow (74-69) win at Southern Illinois Edwardsville. Defending regular season champion Belmont (12-3, 2-0) pulled away from UT Martin (6-9, 2-1) who sustained its first loss of the OVC season. The Bruins have won six straight.

Defending tournament champ Morehead State (10-5, 2-0) won at Austin Peay.

Murray State Wins in Edwardsville

Leading by 15 points at the half, the Racers had to hold on to win as SIUE put together a spectacular second half. Freshman sensation Ray’Sean Taylor scored 24 points for the Cougars (6-8, 0-1) who dropped their conference opener.

During our seven minute, post-game interview McMahon says he was impressed with Taylor and says this is the most talented SIUE team he has seen. We talked about the week ahead for the Racers. Monday there will be a gathereing to celebrate Murray’s move to the Missouri Valley Conference. Thursday they battle Tennessee State and next Saturday is the all-important game with Belmont.

Belmont Wins @ UT Martin

Eleven Bruins scored points led by all-OVC center Nick Muszynski’s 20 points. Belmont led by 11 at the half and pulled away to an easy 81-55 victory over the previously unbeaten Skyhawks. ‘Moose’ added six rebounds and four assists. Grayson Murphy contributed 12 points and eight assists. Chris Nix led the Skyhawks with 17 points.

Morehead State Prevails at Austin Peay

There were only three double-digit scorers in the game at Clarksville. MSU’s Johni Broome scored 19 points for the victors. Austin Peay newcomers Elijah Hutchins-Everett (15) and Caleb Stone-Carrawell (13) continue to impress. The Governors are 0-3 in OVC play.

TSU Tops 90 Points

Tennessee State scored 95 or more points for the third time this season. Five Tigers reached double digits. Marcus Fitzgerald led the way with 23 points. SEMO freshman star Phillip Russell contributed 22 points in defeat. Russell is a multi-week winner of the OVC’s ‘Freshman of the Week’ award. TSU is 1-1 and the Redhawks are 1-3.

Flooding, lightning strikes, etc. have cost @RacersHoops two home games. Had to play 'neutral site' tonight instead of at home and Wednesday's goes from home to away. Tough break for the Racers, and the whole area has been hit with difficulties. #FatherHarry

Murray State's scheduled home game Wednesday vs. Southern Illinois being moved to Banterra Center in Carbondale. #ValleyHoops

Gigantic game for @BradleyUMBB today in Des Moines. If they have a chance to catch @DrakeBulldogsMB, they have to win today. The Bulldogs can basically win the title today. @BustingBrackets breaks it all down. #FatherHarry https://bit.ly/3EGiVgi

Not rooting for any particular @ValleyHoops, but chaos is always fun. If things break certain ways, after today there could be a six-way tie for fifth place.
