One Upset and One Near Miss

Lady Bears Defeat Gonzaga

(St. Louis, MO) – Missouri State guard Lacy Stokes’ game-winning free throw brought the Lady Bears one upset and Northern Iowa had a near miss. MTE season opened for Missouri Valley Conference teams with three games on Thanksgiving day.

One Upset

Missouri State led throughout the game against the CollegeInsider.com’s top-ranked mid-major team Gonzaga. 65-64 was the final. The Lady Bears led by twelve points heading into the final quarter and the Bulldogs roared back to tie the game at 64 with thirteen seconds left. Stokes’ free throw won it for Missouri State (4-1). Gonzaga fell to 4-3.

Stokes finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists. Three other Lady Bears reached double figures in scoring. Paige Rocca scored 14 points, Kyra Daniels added 12 points and Kaemyn Bekemeier contributed 11.

Missouri State continues its demanding schedule with a game against the nation’s leading scoring team, Florida State. The two teams meet in the Paradise Jam’s second round game at 4:30 Friday. The Seminoles defeated Texas Tech 70-62.

One Near Miss

Northern Iowa’s Maya McDermott made two free throws with three seconds left to give the Panthers a two-point lead over Auburn, but Tiger DeYona Gaston’s three-pointer as time expired gave Auburn a 65-64 victory. McDermott finished with 29 points after scoring 37 against Iowa State last week. Kayba Laube added twelve points.

UNI (3-2) faces Kansas Friday’s second round action of the  Paradise Jam.

Drake Drops Fourth Straight

The Bulldogs uncharacteristic slump continued Thursday. Wyoming defeated Drake 71-57 during first round action at the Discover Puerto Rico Classic. The Bulldogs shot just .375 from the field and MVC MVP Katie Dinnebier was limited to five points. Drake (2-4) faces Green Bay Friday at 2:00 pm.
