OVC/MVC Women’s Awards
Explosive Performances
(St. Louis, MO) – Preseason all-conference picks highlight the Ohio Valley and Missouri Valley Conference weekly women’s awards. Explosive performances were in abundance in both conferences and both leagues battled numerous ‘power conference’ teams.
OVC squads won ten of 22 opening week games, with four losses coming on the home courts of money conference powers. MVC teams were 10-9 during the opening week with four defeats coming on power conference courts.
Illinois State landed the league’s best win so far with a victory at Northwestern.
Players of the Week
Drake’s Anna Miller posted two, double-doubles and averaged 22.5 points, twelve rebounds and 4.5 blocks during the Bulldogs’ two wins. The Valley’s ‘Player of the Week’ has now become Drake’s career leader in blocked shots with 219.
Reigning OVC ‘Player of the Year’, Macy McGlone is this week’s ‘Player of the Week’. The Eastern Illinois senior recorded two, double-doubles of her own and averaged 25.5 points and 13.5 rebounds during two Panther contests. McGlone was second nationally last season with 26 double-doubles and was also the league’s ‘Defensive Player of the Year.’ McGlone surpassed the 1,000 point in her EIU career and 1,100 points in her entire career.
Newcomers of the Week
During the Illinois State win at Northwestern Addison Martin recorded a double-double. It was the Redbirds’ only game of the opening week and Martin scored twelve points and grabbed eleven rebounds. The Abilene Christian transfer is the Valley’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’.
Western Illinois won both of its opening week games and Mia Nicastro was a big part of that success. The 6’2 junior put together an impressive stat line. The Saint Louis transfer averaged 20 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists. Collecting the OVC’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’ paired nicely with last year’s ‘Freshman of the Year’ Raegan McCowan who averaged 27 points and 9.5 rebounds during the opening week activities.
Freshmen Women’s Honors
Evansville rookie Camryn Runner scored 18 points in her collegiate debut and followed that up with a 17-point performance. The Purple Aces split their opening two games and Runner is the MVC’s ‘Freshman of the Week’.
Southeast Missouri lost its two opening week games, but freshman Zoe Best is off to a good start. The OVC ‘Freshman of the Week’ scored 25 points in a loss to Dayton and added ten more points against Texas. SEMO has a brutal schedule, playing two Southeastern Conference teams, four from the Valley, Dayton and Eastern Kentucky prior to OVC play.
