OVC Players of the Week

Three Different Teams Represented

All three players pick up their first league-wide award.

Editor: The following is part of a press release from ovcsports.com.

PLAYER
Ben Sheppard, G • Belmont
In a pair of wins last week Sheppard averaged 21.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.5 assists/game while hitting 62.1 percent (18-of-29) from the field as Belmont improved to 4-0 in OVC play. In the team’s 68-55 home win over rival Murray State, Sheppard had a career-high 21 points. He also limited All-OVC performer Tevin Brown to just two field goals. He matched that career-high three days later with 21 points in a 90-69 win at UT Martin. In that win, Sheppard added a career-high six steals.

NEWCOMER
Amanze Ngumezi, F • Jacksonville State
Ngumezi, a transfer from Georgia, had a career-high 20 points, eight rebounds, an assist and block in 21 minutes off the bench in Jacksonville State’s 80-70 home win over UT Martin. The Gamecocks improved to 3-0 in Conference play and Ngumezi has now scored in double figures in three-straight games.

FRESHMAN
Wendell Green Jr., G • Eastern Kentucky
In two wins, Green averaged 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 assists/game while hitting 50 percent (5-of-10) from 3-point range. Green exploded for 30 points in Saturday’s 80-75 road win over Austin Peay; the 30 points is the second most nationally by a freshman this season (trailing only 32 points by LSU’s Cameron Thomas), and second-most by any OVC player this year. At one point Green scored 14-straight points in a 3:22 stretch of the first half. He started the week with nine points, a season-high five steals, three assists, three rebounds and a block in a home victory over Eastern Illinois. Green leads all OVC freshmen in assists (4.5/game) and steals (2.0/game) and is second in scoring (11.9 points/game).

Flooding, lightning strikes, etc. have cost @RacersHoops two home games. Had to play 'neutral site' tonight instead of at home and Wednesday's goes from home to away. Tough break for the Racers, and the whole area has been hit with difficulties. #FatherHarry

Josh Betts @BettsOnSports

Murray State's scheduled home game Wednesday vs. Southern Illinois being moved to Banterra Center in Carbondale. #ValleyHoops

Gigantic game for @BradleyUMBB today in Des Moines. If they have a chance to catch @DrakeBulldogsMB, they have to win today. The Bulldogs can basically win the title today. @BustingBrackets breaks it all down. #FatherHarry https://bit.ly/3EGiVgi

Not rooting for any particular @ValleyHoops, but chaos is always fun. If things break certain ways, after today there could be a six-way tie for fifth place.
