Ohio Valley
Right Man For the Job
(St. Louis, MO) – UT Martin has made another smart basketball decision. Three years ago the administration hired Heath Schroyer and the veteran coach turned the program around and led the Skyhawks to back-to-back 20-win seasons. UT Martin won it’s first ever Ohio Valley Conference West Division title.
When Schroyer left for an assistant coaching job at North Carolina State, interim athletic director Kevin McMillan promoted Associate Head Coach Anthony Stewart to interim head coach. Earlier this month UTM administration removed the ‘interim’ tag, in a move that can only be viewed as brilliant.
Stewart has a corporate background and was in charge of hiring Schroyer’s staff and was a key cog in recruiting virtually all the existing Skyhawk players. Stewart has been patiently preparing for a head coaching position.
McMillan expressed his excitement in hiring Stewart to utmsports.com.
“Not only has he done an unbelievable job as interim head coach but he has been a vital key to our program’s success since he arrived in 2014,” said McMillan. “I am confident in Coach Stewart’s abilities and look forward to watching him develop into a successful head coach and leader of men.”
Stewart is hopeful that he and his Skyhawk players will represent the West Tennessee community with hard work and a respectful approach to basketball and life.
The Hawks and Stewart tip off their first season together Friday night at Mississippi.
