Stars Emerging

(St. Louis, MO) – Special seasons are emerging for the Valley Conferences. Historic performances are happening so regularly that we are witnessing something truly special. Who is special this week in the Three Valleys?

Egidijus Mockevicius – mvc-sports.com

Egidijus Mockevicius is climbing the Valley’s all-time double-double list and conference’s rebounding ladder. Last week he averaged 14 points and 15 rebounds in Evansville’s three games. His 21 rebounds against Santa Clara were the most by a Purple Ace in over 30 years.

This week’s MVC ‘Player of the Week’ is averaging a double-double for the season and is closing in on becoming the 14th player in league history to score 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds. He is currently the 34th best rebounder in conference history.

Drake’s Kale Abrahamson is one of only two players in college basketball to top the 40 point mark this year and he is one of five players in the MVC to turn the trick in the past ten seasons. He is the first to do it since Evansville’s D.J. Balentine scored 43 in January of 2014. For his efforts, Abrahamson was named ‘Newcomer of the Week.’

Ohio Valley Conference

Tennessee Tech swept four games last week and seniors Torrence Rowe and Ryan Martin put together special performances. Rowe was named OVC ‘Player of the Week’ for averaging just under 19 points and six assists over the four games. The Atlanta, Georgia native is fourth among OVC scorers and third in assists.

Fellow senior Ryan Martin averaged 16.5 points and 8.8 rebounds during their four game sweep. The 6’9 transfer (South Plains College) earned his first double-double of the year against Robert Morris. He is the OVC ‘Newcomer of the Week.’

Nick Mayo took down his second straight ‘Freshman of the Week’ honor. The first year Eastern Kentucky forward averaged 19.5 ppg. Mayo scored a career high 21 points against Thomas More. He leads all OVC freshman in scoring with a 12.7 ppg average.

When you score 47% of your team’s points for a week and you tie a conference single game scoring record, you are liable to win the conference ‘Player of the Week’ award. That’s what Lewis College forward Max Strus did last week.

Strus tied a GLVC record 52 points against Northwood. He was an amazing 12 of 14 from beyond the three-point-line. Strus is the first Flyer to win the weekly award since 2011.
