The NIT Nashville Championship
Belmont Faces Vanderbilt
(St. Louis, MO) – Tonight settles the NIT Nashville Championship. Belmont (25-7) faces off with Nashville neighbor Vanderbilt (17-16). Game time for this National Invitation Tournament game is set for 6 pm and can be seen on ESPN2.
While this is Belmont’s 15th postseason appearance in the last 17 seasons and its fifth NIT appearance, it has been a turn-around season for the Commodores. Jerry Stackhouse’s team won just nine games last season. Vandy has a 65 KenPom rating and the Bruins finished the season with an 82.
Scottie Pippen Junior leads the Commodores with a 20.2 scoring average and like his father, he is a stat-box stuffer, averaging 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. The Commodores struggled late in the season , losing three of their last four regular season games, but righted the ship at the SEC Tournament. Vandy knocked off Georgia and Alabama before taking a narrow loss to Kentucky in the tournament quarterfinals.
Belmont won ten straight games before losing to Murray State in late February. Casey Alexancer’s team defeated Tennessee State during the season finale, but then lost to Morehead State in the OVC Tournament.
The Bruins boast in having three all-OVC performers in Nick Muszynski, Grayson Murphy and Ben Sheppard. Murphy is the Ohio Valley Conference all-time leader in assists and steals.
The NIT Nashville Championship is worth the watch!
