The Upset in Greg Lansing’s Words

(Cape Girardeau, MO) – Indiana State has done it again! Last year it was Butler going down, and on the opening day of the season it was the mighty Indiana Hoosiers. The Sycamores marched into Assembly Hall and came away with a convincing 90-69 win over their Big 10 neighbors.

As I was broadcasting a game at Southeast Missouri State, I couldn’t help peaking at the Missouri Valley Conference opening night scores. There were big victories as the Valley won six of their seven openers, but of course none were bigger than ISU’s over Archie Miller’s squad.

I caught up with head coach Greg Lansing and discussed the win, his first as a head coach at Assembly Hall, and perhaps a sign of things to come for the Sycamores. Here is most of that interview.

A depleted Northern Iowa roster wasn’t able to keep up with the national champion North Carolina team in Chapel Hill, but the rest of the MVC teams were undefeated.

An injury riddled Southern Illinois squad went on the road and defeated defending Big South Conference champion Winthrop 81-66. Missouri State knocked off a Western Kentucky team that many believe will be the second best team in Conference USA 85-80. Other winners were Valparaiso, Loyola (over Wright State) and Evansville.

Bradley, Drake and Illinois State get started today, as the Redbirds travel to Fort Myers, Florida for a game with defending Atlantic Sun Conference champion Florida Gulf Coast.
