UNI Giant Killers
Women Defeat Iowa State
(St. Louis, MO) – The UNI giant killers are at it again. Northern Iowa’s women’s team knocked off eighth ranked Iowa State 87-75 behind the super-human performance of Maya McDermott.
UNI was playing without all-Missouri Valley Conference star Grace Boffeli and trailed by three points at half time. Sparked by McDermott’s 37 points and Kayba Laube’s 21 the shorthanded Panthers outscored the Cyclones by twelve points during the decisive third quarter.
The biggest win for the Missouri Valley Conference this season occurred before a crowd of 5,304 at the McLeod Center. It was the program’s first top-ten win ever and UNI’s fifteenth win over a power conference team under head coach Tanya Warren.
UNI’s last giant killer win was over Vanderbilt on November 25, 2022.
McDermott’s 37 points were a personal best, and her scoring explosion pushed her career point total over the 1,400 mark (1,415). Her four assists lift her career total to an even 350. McDermott’s 37 points bested her 36-point performance during a game last season with Murray State. She scored 30 in last year’s contest with the Cyclones.
This the program’s first win over Iowa State since December of 2019, during the same season that they defeated the University of Iowa. Warren has now accumulated 325 career victories.
The University announced that Boffeli is out for the season with a torn ACL. Warren’s UNI giant killers are off until next week’s game with Auburn at the Paradise Jam.
