Week Two Valley Stars
Emerging Stars in Both Valleys
(Palm Springs, CA) – Emerging stars in the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conferences are both new and old. While early season results have been both exciting and uneven, there have been some outstanding individual performances. Southern Illinois’ (Carbondale) victory over Pacific 12 member Colorado and Austin Peay’s upset of Dayton have been some of the season’s highlights.
Missouri Valley Conference Stars
Northern Iowa nearly upset Arkansas and senior Trae Berhow exploded with 23 points, including seven three pointers. His 172 career triples, moved him into seventh on the Panther all-time list. Berhow is the Valley’s ‘Player of the Week‘.
Loyola is off to a 4-0 start and Princeton transfer Ryan Schwieger is one of the reasons for their success. The 6’7 senior recorded a pair of 22-point performances and has been named the ‘Newcomer of the Week‘. Schwieger connected on six of eight shots from down town and made all 12 of his tosses from the free throw line.
Ohio Valley Conference Stars
A familiar name is atop the ‘Player of the Week‘ list this week. Belmont’s Nick Muszynski is the honoree. The Belmont (3-1) grad student averaged 21.5 points and nine rebounds during the Bruins’ two wins. Muszynski and the Bruins have a busy week. They play LSU tonight (Monday) and then participate in the ESPN Events Invitational where they will play Drake and then either Iona or Alabama.
KJ Simon followed Ryan Ridder from Bethune Cookman to UT Martin. Today the 6’3 junior was named this week’s OVC ‘Newcomer of the Week‘. Simon averaged 18.3 points per game during the Skyhawks’ participation in the Paradise Classic. Simon is the league’s third leading scorer (17.8 points per game).
Elijah Hutchins-Everett is two-for-two. The 6’11 Austin Peay freshman was last week’s ‘Co-Freshman of the Week‘ and this week he owns that honor outright. He averaged 14.5 ppg and 13 rebounds during the Governors’ two games. Hutchins-Everett scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds during APSU’s win at Dayton.
