Who Will Emerge at the Denver Miller Classic?
(St. Louis, MO) –Coming away with the hardware at the Denver Miller Classic will be no easy task this year. Some truly upper echelon teams are a part of the Kirkwood High School based tournament.
Three of the top 13 teams in the St. Louis area are the top three seeds in this year’s event that begins Thursday January 15. On top of that, two teams from the top 20 of the small school polls are the fourth and fifth seeds in this traditional tournament.
Top seeded O’Fallon (11-4) comes to the Classic with three straight wins including a defeat of highly ranked Edwardsville. Donovan Franklin (20.7 ppg) and Chance Armstrong (11.7) spark the offense for #13 Panthers.
Two of second seeded McCluer North’s (7-3) losses have come to the top two ranked small schools in the St. Louis area (Althoff and St. Louis Christian). The Stars also, earned a victory over Edwardsville and won the Borgia Tournament. Demarco Owens (18.1 & 8.9) leads the team in scoring and rebounding. Joining Owens in double figure scoring are DeMonte Morris and Ryun Stokes.
The host Pioneers of Kirkwood (9-3) have won three straight and their only losses have come to Columbia Hickman, nationally known Springfield Kickapoo and St. Louis’ 8th ranked team Lafayette. Kirkwood is the third seed and 12th in the latest www.Stlhighschoolsports.com poll.
Fourth seeded Jennings is 15th and fifth seeded Duchesne is 11th in the latest small school poll.
