Young Shockers Are Taking Over
(St. Louis, MO) – Two underclassmen from Wichita State were named to this year’s All Missouri Valley Conference team as Gregg Marshall’s machine just keeps rolling along.
Last year’s ‘Freshman of the Year‘ Markis McDuffie was joined by this year’s likely recipient of that award, Landry Shamet on the Valley’s all-conference team. Shamet is just the fourth freshman in league history to earn such an honor and he’s the first since Doug McDermott burst on the scene in 2011. Shamet is the second first year Shocker to be a first-teamer, as Cleo Littleton gained that distinction in 1952.
Joining the Shockers on the first team squad were likely ‘Newcomer of the Year‘ Alize Johnson of Missouri State and seniors Milton Doyle of Loyola and Illinois State’s Paris Lee.
The second team consisted of the league’s leading scorer, Jaylon Brown (Evansville), Illinois State’s Deontae Hawkins and MiKyle McIntosh, ‘Pre-Season Player of the Year’ Jeremy Morgan (UNI) and Southern Illinois’ Sean O’Brien.
You can compare how the league officials’ choices compared with how we at Valley Hoops Insider lined it out by reading our article Valley Hoops Insider – All Valley Team, and we will high light the comparisons here!
We had four of the first five correct as we selected Doyle, Johnson, Lee and Shamet. We called Morgan a first-teamer and slipped McDuffie on to the second team.
Our second team had an additional difference with the experts. In addition to the obvious switch between McDuffie and Morgan, our second team included Brenton Scott of Indiana State rather than Illinois State’s McIntosh.
The league also announced it’s third team (where they placed Scott), and all-newcomer, all-freshmen and all-defensive teams. For all of that information head to the Missouri Valley website.
